Where are the studios?

E-mail Print PDF
When you first come into Todos Santos, you could be forgiven for thinking that there aren't many working artists in town. True, there are a few studios on the main drags in town, but you have to look deeper than that to find the rest.  Many artists have their studios in or around their residences, which may be right in town, in the true Mexican barrios, or on "el otro lado" where the majority of ex-pat residents have their homes.  Here's a link (to be completed later) to the location of several studios, described briefly below.  Want to see the artist at work?  Many are open by appointment.  Or join the annual studio tour (March 14th, 2010 this season).

Nido de la Garza Sur Estudio (Heron’s Nest South Studio) – Michael Kay McAllister

Awaiting inspiration

Mike is likely Todos Santo’s only artist working exclusively in pastels.  His passion for this medium goes back a great number of years even though his conversion to all pastels only came about roughly twenty years ago.  “It makes for a pretty simple studio set-up,” says Mike, “just good lights, an adjustable easel so I can work from nearly vertical to nearly flat, depending on what I’m doing, and some table space.  Of course, a few hundred pastel sticks, my favorite papers and several large clip boards are needed as well.”

“In the studio I usually work sitting down with my pastels to my right and a large rag in my lap.  A white butcher tray serves as a sort of palette where I put the sticks I am currently using.” He continues, “Then there is usually music playing and plenty of fresh air.  While modern pastels are non-toxic for the most part, there is still a lot of dust associated with using them and I try to keep the studio well ventilated with open windows and a fan.”

Mike’s studio is about 200 sq. ft.  There are color-correct lights suspended from the high ceiling the entire length of the room and all of the table lamps have color-correct bulbs.  A large, counter-height  table provides him with space for laying out work and for framing, which he does himself.  Overhead storage bins hold papers and mat boards.  And, if he needs a break, the other end of the room is his personal gym/training room space.

Oceanview Studio - Gloria Santoyo Ruenitz

Gloria at work in her studioGloria’s Art Studio is located in Todos Santos, in the Tunas Barrio (on the other side). Topete towards Playitas to the blue máquina, left turn to the bottom of the hill on the left side.

Two things are very important for Gloria’s work, her proximity to the ocean and good ventilation. Her main medium being “Encaustic (hot wax)” requires good air flow because of its toxicity. Plenty of open walls and good views of the blue water makes this space optimum for the artist.

Gloria is a mixed media conceptual artist working with different materials from paper, wood, metal, found objects from 2D to 3D.

She is planning a couple of encaustic and collage workshops in the following year, which will be held right here in her studio.

Gloria can be reached for an appointment at 612-118-3683 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
