What is "ARTS"?

Artists of Todos Santos / Artistas de Todos Santos (ARTS) is an informal group of artists and art lovers dedicated to the development and support of a vibrant and inclusive arts community and to inspiring and growing visual arts talent in Todos Santos. Our initial focus is Visual Arts.

(ARTS) was formed in 2008 in response to a perceived need for a single resource for information and communications both within the artist community of Todos Santos and between that community and the local and tourist communities at large.  The group believes that by facilitating communications, all of the artists in the Todos Santos area will benefit through visibility to the general public of the presence of a large number of artists here and through the on-going support of the artist community itself.  ARTS is inclusive by appealing to all levels of professional and amateur artists with exhibitions and programs to promote the artistic community and provide educational and public participation activities.  Our activity areas are evolving.  Click on "read more" to see some of our current and past endeavors.

WEBSITE   Our website is filled with information about artists, galleries, classes, workshops and art related activities in and around the area plus a weekly arts calendar.  The site, updated regularly, provides a forum for artist contact and a source for visitors to plan their art experiences while in Todos Santos.  Visit the website at www.artistsoftodossantos.com.

GALLERY   In conjunction with Cafelix Coffee & Kitchen, ARTS operates a gallery, VISIONS, showcasing the work of ten of the area’s artists who are contributing participants in ARTS.  To further provide a venue for exhibition the gallery also stages two to three feature shows each season that appeal to a broad array of area artists.

  • ANNUAL SMALL WORKS SHOW   This annual December show is open to all artists who can legally sell their work in Mexico and features works no larger than 12” square and selling for $150usd or less.  The show is open entry with no jury and only a small hanging fee.
  • JURIED PHOTO SHOW   February of 2010 will see the inauguration of a juried photo show, the first of its kind in Todos Santos.  Two international jurors will select the work for the exhibition and award prizes in two categories, Baja subjects and general photography.  This show is open to all photographers with a special “NFS” exhibition section for those who wish to show their work but may not legally sell.
  • FEATURED MEMBERS SHOWS  New Todos Santos artists who have applied to be contributing members and have subsequently been approved through a jury process  are showcased in special Members Shows.  All exhibiting members of ARTS have permanent gallery space in Visions.

MEET THE ARTISTS   During the months of January through March ARTS sponsors a bi-weekly speaker series highlighting local artists who talk about their work, demonstrate their skills and techniques and answer questions.  Our speakers include both Mexican and non-Mexican artists including painters, sculptors, multi-media artists, photographers and writers.  Some presentations are bi-lingual.  These sessions are on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 and are announced in the Baja Western Onion and on our website.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES   ARTS partners with other organizations, from time to time, to create a community activity.

  • WALL OF SAINTS   In 2009 over 30 artists and 50 local children from the Palapa Society arts and crafts programs came together to create the “Wall of Saints” along the hill on Calle Topete.  More than 35 images of saints, each created by an artist/child team, cover a full block-long retaining wall.  The project went far beyond painting a wall in that it brought together large portions of the Mexican and foreign communities to create a lasting image of cooperation.
  • HISTORY PROJECT   ARTS is currently in the planning stages of another community project involving both communities to create a series of images depicting aspects of the history of Mexico.
  • ARTISTS’ STUDIO AND GALLERY TOUR   In March of 2010, ARTS will stage the First Annual Artists’ Studio and Gallery Tour of Todos Santos with the proceeds benefitting the art programs of the Palapa Society and Escuela Pacifica.  Over 20 artists’ studios will be open to the public with each artist demonstrating their particular skills and having work available for purchase.  Several galleries will be open especially for this event and some of the town’s restaurants will be providing special offers for those on the tour.  Watch the Baja Western Onion, Gringo Gazette, El Calendario, Baja Citizen and other media venues for more information or visit our website, artistsoftodossantos.com for updated information.
